"Happy Go Lucky" might make you happy to know good films are still being made

Movie trailers make me feel old. All the buzzing and the crashing and the jump cutting. I end up like your grandma at a rock concert asking "Why is it so loud?" What happened to a nice, simple character driven movie?

The new movie "Happy Go Lucky" is a relief. In a departure from his usual depressed tales, director Mike Leigh (VERA DRAKE) takes a lighter look with an exploration into the life of 30-year-old Poppy, whose positive, chill outlook epitomizes the title. London based, her and her friends are fun, foolish, frenetic, easy to watch, enjoyable. Poppy (brilliantly played by Alexis Zegerman) is a primary school teacher, who lives in London with her best friend Zoe. We follow her throughout her day, where nothing too unusual happens but her perspective of each thing is dynamic and unusual. Poppy's easy breezy attitude is challenged when she decides to take driving lessons, and is assigned to Scott (Eddie Marsan). Scott is a mean spirited, paranoid, unfulfilled man who constantly boarders on the edge of inappropriate. Their relationship comes to a climatic finale with two amazingly powerful performances by both actors.

Mike Leigh does a brilliant job here with casting a well as directing. Poppy's 10-years-and-counting flat-mate and fellow teacher Zoe is played by Alexis Zegerman even and sardonic. She is the perfect counterpoint to Poppy's everlasting smile. Karina Fernandez plays the Flamenco instructor Poppy meets when she follows a colleague to class. Leighs gift for comedy shines in Poppy's introduction to the fiery, emotional universe of flamenco.

There are plenty of gem moments in this movie. From the opening with Poppy and her bike and her flirtation with the book shop clerk to a surprise encounter with a homeless man to her final scene with Zoe, "Happy Go Lucky" does not disappoint. The movie tapes into our feelings about the communities we build, how others perceive us, how we want them to perceive us and into what type of attitudes we put out energy.
